Description
The Needham Market War Memorial Lych Gate is a First World War memorial built in 1921. It features a red brick base with timber above, topped with a tiled roof and a quarry-tiled floor.
The lych gate serves as the entrance to the cemetery on the north-west boundary. It has a symmetrical design with a brick base and a timber screen above, leading to a pitched roof. The outer elevation faces north-west and includes a pair of low timber gates with arched openings and slatted panels. A series of timber posts rise from the base, creating a screen of trefoil-arched openings on either side. The roof is supported by box-framed gable trusses with arching tie-beams, and the gable barge boards feature quatrefoil piercings at their feet. The tie beam on the north-west side is inscribed with ‘IN MEMORIAM / 1914 / 1918'. Additionally, panels on the north-west elevation of the base document the restoration of the lych gate in 1995. Inside, there are fixed timber benches with boarded backs along either side, and the floor is tiled.
