Description
The Chipstable Memorial Lych Gate is a First World War memorial, built around 1919 or 1920. It features an oak-framed structure that rests on flank walls and a plinth made of local stone that is coursed, cut, and squared. The roof is upswept and gabled, covered with plain tiles. The northern and southern gabled ends are similar, each with unglazed lancet windows on either side of the gateway, decorative piercings in the bargeboards, and topped with a wooden finial. The southern side includes half-height oak gates adorned with fine metal straps. The upright posts support braced tie beams, with angled struts above that hold the collar. Attached to the southern tie beam is a slender commemorative plaque, possibly made of bronze, inscribed in raised lettering with "IN MEMORIUM 1914–1918." The timber framing on the western and eastern sides forms an arcade with pointed-arched heads.
