Description

Nos. 119 and 121 High Street is a house and shop with a dwelling at the rear, likely dating from the 17th or 18th century, with two rear sections that are from the early 17th century or earlier. There have been alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building has two storeys and is constructed from timber framing with plaster. The front has a concrete pantiled roof, while the rear has a plain tiled roof. There are three internal chimneys made of red brick.

No. 121 features a 19th-century splayed flat-roofed shop window supported by console brackets and a four-panelled entrance door. No. 119 has a four-panelled door and a flanking bay shop window with large panes and 19th-century sash windows on the upper storey. At the rear of No. 121, there is a two-storey wing from the early 17th century or earlier. Behind No. 119, there is another two-storey wing from the late 16th or early 17th century, which was detached until the 19th century. The ground storey of this wing has painted brick walling, while the upper storey is timber-framed and plastered, with a long-wall jettied along the north side. It has a concrete pantiled roof and features an 18th-century moulded cornice on the upper storey. This wing was used for holding Petty Sessions during the 19th century. From at least 1720 and throughout the 19th century, Nos. 119 and 121 High Street were known as The George Inn.
