Description
This is a timber-framed, prefabricated chapel built in the 1940s as part of a prisoner of war camp, now located within the Henllan Caravan Park. Originally constructed with bituminous felt covering the timber frame, with a corrugated asbestos sheet roof, the rear of the structure now has added metal sheeting. The front facade features a boarded door flanked by windows with 8 panes of metal casements. Long sides have eleven similar windows, and the rear has paired 4-panel doors with a 2-pane overlight.
The interior is divided into nine bays by elliptical arches supported on pilasters with moulded consoles. A small porch is located at the north end, and an apse extends towards the south. Angular timber struts were added around 1992 to support the bays. The north spandrel of each bay, visible when entering, features painted decoration on the roofing felt; each roundel depicts a scene surrounded by symmetrical monochrome vine work. The sequence of images, from north to south, is: an inscription reading "Caelestis vrbs Jervsalem Beata Pacis Visia"; a vase with a spray of lilies; a depiction of a dove; Joseph with the infant Christ; a celestial image of the Virgin and Child; a chalice with grain and vines; and Christ with the crown of thorns. The pilasters are wood covered with paper painted to resemble white marble, while the consoles are similarly constructed with a tin covering a wooden core, with a moulded tin cornice, also painted as marble. The skirting is painted as black marble. Above the north door is a painted figurative work depicting crossed keys. The apse to the south is constructed of cemented brick and features a domed ceiling with a painted scene of the Last Supper, rendered in relief-like coloured figures against a light blue backdrop. A small painted roundel depicting the Virgin, Child and infant St John is positioned above the apse.
The inner porch contains paired swing doors to the chapel, along with a 4-panel door on each side. A painted metal plaque above the north door reads "Questa Ela Casa de Dio Ela Porta del Cielo.” Above the inner door is a painted plasterboard tablet that states "Al Chore sacratissimo di Gesu via Verita e vita di tutte le Genti Prigionieri Italiani a Testimonianza di Fede Dedicano. 70 P.O.W. Camp 3-9-44”.
Original fittings include a cast concrete communion rail bowed centrally, with plain uprights and a low step, finished to resemble polished marble. A cast concrete altar features recessed front and concave sides, with three tiers of moulded shelving and a recessed central area for a crucifix. A portable upper shelving unit constructed of wood and covered in marble-painted paper is also present. A two-stage bullnosed footpace, two side altars with timber framing and roof-felt covering (featuring set-back curved sides, a plinth, and a painted monogram), and detachable tiered shelves are also noted. A simple painted timber lectern and plain wooden Bible stand complete the furnishings; smaller items include approximately 30 candlesticks – made from wood uprights fronted by moulded tin (sourced from food tins) - along with tapering tin vases, and a small wooden crucifix. The building was in a deteriorating condition at the time of inspection in July 1995.
