Description
A bronze statue of Thomas Carlyle, dating from 1929 and created by MacDonald and Creswick of Edinburgh, stands on The Haggs near Ecclefechan. It is a replica of the bronze statue by Carl Boehm that originally stood in Chelsea. The statue depicts a seated figure raised on a square red ashlar base with a cornice. The base is inscribed with the words “Erected by Alexander Carlyle” (nephew of Thomas Carlyle) and “Restored by the National Trust for Scotland, 1981”, indicating that iron railings were likely removed and a modern concrete paved surround was constructed at that time. The statue overlooks the village of Ecclefechan.
