Description
Tennant House is a two-storey building on High Street, Ecclefechan, built in two phases during the second half of the 18th century and remodelled in the early 20th century, incorporating a large glazed shop front. The building has four bays (one plus three), constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings, some of which date back to the 18th century. The exterior has been painted with contrasting margins. The ground floor features corniced shop windows and a pilastered doorcase which contains a recessed panelled door with a fanlight; the shop front now occupies the remainder of the ground floor. Modern glazing is evident on the first floor. The roof is covered with graded slates and features bracketed gutters, straight skews, corniced end and axial stacks. A two-bay east gable connects to a full-height rear wing with its own end stack. The long adjoining range to Church Street is not included in the listing. The listing also covers the area formerly occupied by Fraser’s Shop.
