Description
Carlyle Place is a single-storey cottage, dated 1749 based on an elaborately carved lintel. It was originally two cottages, each with two bays, and paired doors. During the 20th century, the original doorways were blocked and the building was converted into a single cottage. The exterior is of whitewashed rubble with painted ashlar margins. The window lintels and ashlar margins are all chamfered, with the stop-chamfering on the window lintels extending beyond the inner face of the jambs. A modern panelled door now occupies the main entrance. The windows are sash windows with a four-pane glazing pattern. Brick end stacks are visible, and the roof is covered with uniform slates. The carved lintel is a rectangular cartouche containing emblems and the initials "WP MC.” A glazed porch on the south side connects the house to a whitewashed rubble outbuilding with a louvred roof ventilator. Historic photographs, found in early 20th-century guidebooks (held at the Ewart Library, Dumfries), show the original paired doors in use.
