Description

This is an 1865 church building, originally built as a United Presbyterian church and now serving as Hoddom parish church after a fire destroyed the previous parish church in 1975. The church is a T-plan design with simplified Gothic detailing. The exterior is primarily stugged red ashlar with polished dressings, featuring tall, narrow windows with elongated cusped heads, mostly hood-moulded. A three-stage gabled square tower is situated on the north flank of the nave. The first stage of the tower is outwardly expressed by parallel diagonal courses and stepped window levels, incorporating stairs within. The middle stage is designed to accommodate clock faces, while the top stage has louvred openings in gables and gabled dormer heads. A continuous string is raised as a hood-mould above the main door on the west gable and incorporates blind flanking quatrefoils. The roof is covered in slate, with gabletted saw-toothed skews. A transversely set hall and church officer's flat abuts the east gable, with the hall facing door featuring shouldered-headed lights above.

The interior contains three linked galleries supported by cast-iron columns with panelled fronts. The pulpit is recessed behind a large archway and features a decorative cast-iron balustraded front with Gothic details. An "altar rail" also incorporates good cast-iron work. The church grounds are enclosed by cast-iron gates and railings supported by gabletted square red ashlar piers.
