Description

St Fechan’s Church is situated within a quadrangular churchyard in Ecclefechan. The churchyard contains the burial place of Thomas Carlyle and Archibald Arnott, a physician to Napoleon Bonaparte, as well as the site of the now-demolished St Fechan’s Church. The churchyard is enclosed by walls constructed of rubble with ashlar coping, with a gate located at the north end of the west wall. A front wall remains from a former cottage, known as Harthop cottage. The churchyard contains primarily 17th and 19th century headstones, some featuring artisan sculpture. A cast-iron enclosure marks Carlyle's grave, while other graves are enclosed by good quality cast-iron railings. The statutory address is Ecclefechan Village, Johnstone Churchyard.
