Description

The monument on High Street in Sanquhar was erected in 1864 by D J and H Newall of Dalbeattie, who were sculptors. It stands on the site of the old market cross and commemorates the Sanquhar declaration of 1680 and the Sanquhar protestation of 1685. The monument features a plain obelisk that rests on a broader, battered, stepped, and pedimented square base, all elevated on a bullfaced plinth. It is made of white granite and includes inscription panels.
