Description

The Rectory, located at 1 Academy Street in Stranraer, is a mid-19th century, two-storey, three-bay villa designed in a plain classical style. It has a rectangular plan and has been converted into a hostel. The building features small single-storey piended extensions to the south and east. The entrance elevation is constructed of whinstone, while the other elevations are painted; it includes sandstone ashlar dressings, quoins, and long and short surrounds to the windows.

On the north (entrance) elevation, there is a pilastered and corniced entrance doorway with a recessed four-panelled timber door and a letterbox fanlight above. A single window is positioned on the first floor above the entrance, with additional windows on both floors of the flanking bays. The east elevation has single windows at both the ground and first floors, and there is a blocked window in the single-storey extension.

The windows throughout the building are 12-pane timber sash and case. The roof has been replaced and features Velux rooflights on the north and south sides, along with coped gablehead stacks topped with polygonal cans, skews, and moulded skewputts.

The interior was not seen in 1997. The property is enclosed by low coped boundary walls on the north and northeast elevations, with original iron railings and an entrance gate at the center. There is a higher coped rubble wall to the west and southeast, and a boarded timber door is located in the southeast section of the east wall.
