Description
152 and 154 High Street in Dumfries is a mid-18th century three-storey building featuring a symmetrical six-bay elevation facing the street, which includes shops and architraved windows. The building has a pend that is off-centre and leads to the much-altered mid-18th century Hole I' The Wa' inn located at the rear.
The street elevation is constructed of painted ashlar and has tall, possibly enlarged, windows that are all plate glass sashes. Sculptured lions are positioned on the first-floor cills flanking the pend. The building has a cornice, with skewed gables, the northern one featuring kneelers, and end stacks. The steep-pitched slate roof adds to its character. To the south, there is a block that is recessed from the street line, with single windows in its gable.
Hole I' The Wa' is the earliest part of the building, consisting of two storeys made from whitewashed rubble with ashlar margins and a slate roof. It has two first-floor windows with deeply chamfered reveals facing the pend. There are modern additions, including a large extension to the east.
