Description

This building at 283 Portobello High Street in Edinburgh dates from the late 18th to early 19th century and has undergone later alterations and additions. It is a two-storey structure with three bays and single-storey flanking pavilions. The northeast elevation features squared sandstone, while the side elevations and rear are constructed of rubble. There is a later harled addition to the outer left of the rear elevation. The building includes a base course, cornice, and blocking course, with a coped blocking course on the pavilions.

On the northeast (principal) elevation, there are four steps leading to a central six-panelled door, which is topped by a three-pane fanlight and a window at the first floor. Each bay has windows on both floors, and there is a panelled door now located at the centre of the right pavilion.

The southwest (rear) elevation features a door on the outer right of the southeast pavilion, with a single-storey and attic addition to the outer left of the northwest pavilion. The building has 12-pane timber sash and case windows and a grey slate piended roof with rendered and coped wallhead stacks on the northwest and southeast elevations. The rear addition has a mansard roof.

Inside, all shutters are in place and functioning, and there is a delicate cast-iron balustrade on the twisting staircase. The front room, to the left of the entrance, has a segmental-bowed rear wall with original plasterwork.

The boundary walls consist of tall rubble on the sides and rear, with low quadrant walls featuring later railings along the street.
