Description

1A Duddingston Park in Edinburgh is a domestic Gothic house designed by William Lambie Moffat, built between 1875 and 1876. The building features a two-storey rectangular plan constructed from squared and snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings. It has chamfered reveals and mannered lintels, along with stone mullions and transoms. The house is adjoined to the boundary walls of the Portobello High School Annexe.

The west elevation has three bays, with a hoodmoulded door at the center flanked by a plate glass fanlight and a small window above. To the outer left, there is a wide gabled bay featuring a tripartite window at ground level and a bipartite window on the first floor, along with a trefoil panel in the gablehead. The outer right has bipartite windows on each floor, with a gabled dormer head at the first floor that breaks the eaves.

The east elevation faces the playground and has a door at the center, with a lean-to play shelter that is continuous with the retaining walls. There are bipartite windows in the outer bays on the first floor, set within a wide gabled bay to the right that also breaks the elevation.

There is a former addition to the south elevation and a single-storey gabled projection on the north elevation. The windows are sash and case with plate glass and small-pane glazing patterns. The roof is covered with grey slates, and the building features ashlar coped skews and end stacks.

The retaining walls and piers are made of stugged sandstone rubble, connected to those of the school, with gablet capped piers at intervals on the west side. A cast-iron arrowhead gate is also present.
