Description

Ladyloan School in Arbroath was designed by William Lambie Moffat around 1875. This Gothic-style building is a single-storey structure with an H-plan layout, constructed from red sandstone snecked rubble with stugged uniform dressings and a slated roof.

The south front is nearly symmetrical, featuring a cross-wing that creates a recessed center with a gablet above a three-light central window framed by buttressed chimneys. The advanced pavilions have roofs that run parallel to the main building, with gables that include two-light windows and small inner outshots facing into a courtyard. The front of these pavilions has two windows (one single-light and one two-light) and central buttressed chimney gablets.

The flanks of the building are asymmetrical, with gables aligned on the axis of the cross-range. The north front is also asymmetrical, featuring a bellcote at the west gable and a northwest outshot at the east gable porch, along with a later brick chimney at the center of the cross range.

Distinctive detailing includes shouldered and chamfered openings, relieving arches over the two and three-light gable windows, and decorative quatrefoils and circlets in the gables. The gablet chimney pots are uniquely square in plan and pierced by trefoils. The original gatepiers to Ladyloan are also part of the property.
