Chalmers Hospital, Clunie Street, Banff

Chalmers Hospital, located on Clunie Street in Banff, was designed by William Lambie Moffat in 1861 and showcases a Neo-Jacobean style. This tall, symmetrical building features two storeys and an attic, with a total of 13 bays. It is constructed from dark whinstone, accented by contrasting sandstone ashlar dressings and margins. The E-plan frontage is symmetrical, with the outer bays advanced and the central three bays slightly advanced. At the centre of the ground floor, there is a wide segmental-headed entrance approached by a shallow flight of steps, with 'Chalmers Hospital' inscribed above the lintel.

A string course runs between the ground and first floors. The windows are long, transomed, and mullioned, consisting of 2- and 3-light configurations with original timber frames and multi-pane glazing. The outer advanced bays are topped with shaped Jacobean gables, while the remaining bays feature finialled triangular gables. The outer advanced bays also have tall piended platform roofs that end with cast-iron brattishing.

At the centre, there is a white-painted timber arcaded cupola with a facetted lead roof and a weathervane. The building has corniced end and ridge stacks, a local slate roof, and the front advanced wings have been re-slated with Welsh slate.
