Description

William Lambie Moffat, 1861. Neo-Jacobean. Tall gabled symmetrical 2-storey and attic hospital of 13 bays. Dark whinstone, generous use of contrasting sandstone ashlar dressings and margins. Symmetrical E-plan frontage with advanced outer bays and slightly advanced centre 3 bays with wide segmental-headed entrance in centre of ground floor

approached by shallow flight of steps with 'Chalmers Hospital' inscribed above lintel. String course between ground and lst floors. Long transomed and mullioned 2- and 3-light windows with original timber and multi-pane glazed frames.

Shaped Jacobean gables crown wallhead of outer advanced bays and central bays; remaining bays with finialled triangular gables.

Outer advanced bays with tall piended platform roofs terminating

with cast-iron brattishing.

Centre white painted timber arcaded cupola with facetted lead roof and weathervane; corniced end and ridge stacks; local slate roof except front advanced wings re-slated with Welsh slate.
