Description
The Bell Rock Lighthouse Signal Tower, built in 1813, is a notable classical and castellated structure located on Lady Loan in Arbroath. The building features a central, engaged, four-storey tower that rises from a two-storey, three-bay house with a piend roof. The lower two stages of the tower form the bowed center bay of the house, which includes a fanlit door at ground level surrounded by a Roman Doric portico. Above this, there are three windows on the first floor and additional windows in the flanking bays. The wallhead has a blocking course that bows around the tower.
The upper stages of the tower are adorned with narrow round-arched windows, a dividing string course, a frieze with quatrefoil detailing, and corbelled castellation at the top. A flagpole and signal ball sit atop the tower.
Flanking the entrance to the signal tower are two classical lodges, each with three bays. These lodges consist of two-storey center bays with windows on each floor, flanked by tall, single-storey, blank quasi pavilions with piend roofs. The lodges feature panelled and coped gate pilasters at their inner quoins. An additional mansard roof was added around 1956. The windows are small-pane timber sash and case glazing, and the roofs are covered with grey slate. There are wallhead stacks at the two-storey base of the tower. The interior was not accessible for viewing in 1997.
