Description
This cottage, located on Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh, was designed by Robert Morham in 1886. It is an asymmetrical single-storey and attic structure with gabled roofs, built from squared and snecked bull-faced red sandstone featuring polished dressings. The cottage has a tall base course and a moulded string course that separates the ground and attic floors. The broad eaves are adorned with decorative green painted barge-boarding, and the windows are set in projecting surrounds.
On the south elevation, there is a projecting gabled bay to the right, which includes single windows on the ground floor and in the gable, with a single window to the left. The west elevation also features a projecting gabled bay to the right, which has a flat-roofed canted window at ground level and a single window in the gable above. There is a pentice-roofed porch with timber columns in the re-entrant angle and a timber boarded door to the left.
The north elevation shows a gabled bay to the right with a canted window at ground level, alongside a pentice-roofed single-storey projection to the left and a swept dormer in the attic. The east elevation consists of a single-storey lean-to bay to the right, a central gabled bay with windows for both the ground and attic, and a single-storey bay to the left.
The cottage features pivot windows, a greenish slate roof, decorative terracotta ridge tiles and finials, and a corniced ridge stack with chamfered corners and circular cans.
