Description

The Royal Scottish Academy, located at 77A Princes Street in Edinburgh, was designed by William Playfair and constructed between 1822 and 1826, with extensions and enhancements made from 1832 to 1835. There were later alterations and additions by WT Oldrieve between 1911 and 1912. The building features a sculpture by Sir John Steell from 1844. It is designed as an art gallery in the style of a rectangular-plan Greek Doric temple, sitting on a stylobate and constructed from Culallo and Craigleith sandstone ashlar. The exterior includes fluted Greek Doric columns and an acanthus frieze beneath a Doric entablature, which is adorned with triglyphs, guttae, wreathed metopes, and a mutuled cornice. The pediments feature scrolled foliate carvings, and there are acroteria and antefixae. The building has prostyle octostyle porticoes on the north and south sides, with colonnades on the west and east, which have distyle pedimented projections at the ends. A statue of Queen Victoria is positioned above the north portico, and paired sphinxes are located at the corners.

Inside, a marble staircase leads to a series of inter-related galleries.
