Description
Castle Grove, located at Dundas Castle, is a cottage built in the later 19th century with an early 20th century addition. The building features a single storey, three-bay symmetrical main range with a gabled porch that projects at the center of the main elevation. There is also a flat-roofed, single-storey, single-bay addition to the side gable. The principal elevation is constructed of bull-faced sandstone, while the side and rear elevations are made of stugged sandstone rubble, with stugged and droved ashlar dressings. Notable architectural details include a base course and stop-chamfered arrises around the windows, entrance door, principal corners, and chimneys of the main range.
On the south (principal) elevation, the near-symmetrical design features a window in the south gable of the porch that breaks the eaves in the center bay, with a door on the return to the right. There are two-light mullioned windows in the flanking bays, and a two-light mullioned window in the addition on the right. The west gable has a single window at ground level on the outer left side.
The north (rear) elevation shows the porch projecting at the center, with a window offset to the left, another window adjacent to the right, and a narrow window to the outer left in the bay to the left. The cottage is fitted with 4-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with purple-grey slate, featuring overhanging timber eaves and exposed rafter ends, along with timber bargeboards on the principal and entrance porch gables. The rear porch has a piended roof. The principal gables are topped with stugged ashlar stacks that have deep battered copes and circular cans.
Additionally, there are hooped iron railings on the south side, with ball-finialled stanchions supporting a matching gate at the center.
