Description
25 Bridge Street in Edinburgh features wrought-iron railings designed by Phoebe Traquair and Frank C Mears, executed by Thomas Hadden in 1924. The railings have a naturalistic foliate decoration and lead up a ramp to the entrance of the building. There are two waist-high gates, along with another similar gate that opens onto the lane between Woodhall Road and Bridge Road.
At the bottom of the ramp, the gate has a tear-shaped rondel at the top center, which contains a thistle and a bunch of flowers, with a decorative grid below and scrolls on either side. Above the gate is a semicircular arch adorned with a bunch of flowers that forms a central finial, and realistic birds are perched on the scrolls at each side.
The railings connect four large square panels, each featuring a thistle or flower motif in a central rondel, with stamped animal figures in the spandrels. The lowest thistle panel is inscribed with the names of Phoebe Traquair, Thomas Hadden, and the initials of Walter Blaikie and his two daughters. At the top of the ramp, there are two smaller rectangular panels that display lions rampant. Between the panels are four tall, narrow sections that rise above the railings and are topped with lilies. Near the top of the ramp, there is a gate with a flat interlaced pattern, which may represent a monogram. A similar gate is located at the lane between Woodhall Road and Bridge Road.
