Description
The railings in Manuden date from around 1820, with an extension added at the south end around 1840. They are made of wrought iron and feature cast finials, standing on a red brick plinth with stone coping. The low plinth ends to the north-east in a red brick pier topped with a pyramid stone cap. The railings include circular stiles supported by twin and single scrolled braces, finishing in fleur-de-lys finials. The vertical bars are circular in section and rise through plain bottom, middle, and top rails, ending in ball and steeple finials. The lower verticals, which are of a slighter section, run from the bottom to the middle rail without finials. The top rails are designed to ramp up to meet the stiles.
The later southern section of the railings, which belongs to Cedar House, features stiles made of two half-round sections that meet to form a circle, with the plinth rising to accommodate the drop in ground level. These railings are cut back to meet the south wall of Cedar House. The northern section includes double-leaf gates situated between plain square stiles, which also end in fleur-de-lys finials. The gates are constructed similarly to the railings but feature opposing scrolled overthrows. These railings have group value with those at Manuden House.
