Description
The railings north of the former orthopaedic hospital are a boundary wall and railings built in 1931 by Gordon Mitchell Forsyth, with panels designed by William Ruscoe. The structure features a brick wall topped with stone coping and iron railings that include bronze or alloy panels. There are eleven bays of railings positioned between brick piers that have fluted stone caps, all resting on a brick dwarf wall with stone coping. The railings are designed in a fretwork pattern, and each bay contains a bronze or alloy relief panel by William Ruscoe, showcasing scenes of girls skipping, playing with hoops, swimming with dolphins, youths running, and a heraldic panel with a monogram. These railings serve as a memorial to Viscountess Ednam, the president of the orthopaedic hospital, who tragically lost her life in an air crash. They are notable for their artistic merit and represent an unusual form of memorial.
