Description
The Newliston Arms Hotel, located at 76-82 Main Street, Kirkliston Village, dates to 1900. It comprises a three-story, five-bay gabled asymmetrical block, with an earlier, lower two-story, three-bay block attached to the west. The building has a rectangular plan.
The main facade is constructed of stugged, squared, and snecked sandstone with droved margins, and raised cills. A stepped string course echoes the hoodmoulds above the first-floor windows, while recessed square panels are positioned above the lintels of those same windows. A painted, battlemented porch is centrally placed on the left side of the building; it has deeply stop-chamfered arrises and raised moulded panels on either side of the door, painted in a contrasting colour. A heraldic device is set above the door, with the words 'Newliston Arms' printed above. Small windows with stop-chamfered reveals are visible on the east and west returns, and flanking ground-floor windows are also present. The first and second floors have three regular windows, each with a gabled dormerhead, and arrowloops in the gableheads. To the right of this section are two gabled bays, with a later inserted door at what was formerly a pend opening. A painted sign is above the door, flanked by a window to the left. A two-story canted bay extends from the outer right, featuring a string course between the storeys and a battlemented parapet. A first-floor window is on the left, and two hoodmoulded windows are on the second floor. A pedimented datestone, bearing entwined numbering '1900', is centered in the gablehead, topped by a ball finial. The western side abuts the main block with a lower, earlier three-bay, two-story rectangular block built of rubble with raised cills. A modern stone forestair leads to a door at the center, with a window at ground floor left and evidence of a blocked window to the right (originally mirroring the left window), now obscured by the stair. Smaller windows flank the first-floor door, and a small skylight is to the left of the ridge. An unsympathetic modern, rendered, single-story function room addition abuts to the west.
The rear elevation has brick lean-to additions built against the rear wall, extending to the level of the second floor.
The east elevation has a window at the first floor level. The west elevation showcases a modern, single-story, pantiled addition. Behind this is the gable of the earlier block, bridged over by a valley between stacks and featuring a center window. A tall, broad stack of the main block rises behind the wing.
The windows are predominantly 4-pane plate glass, sash and case, and plate glass. The roof is grey slate, with ashlar coping to the skews and skewblocks; a gabletted skewputt is on the east gable. Tall wallhead and gablehead stacks are present; the right stack has twelve cans.
