Description

Seals Craig Hotel, located at 23 Edinburgh Road in South Queensferry, is a baronial hotel built in the later 18th century and substantially remodeled in 1870. A restaurant extension was added in 1956 by the architectural firm Peddie & McKay. The hotel is situated on a narrow site and is three stories tall, constructed of square and snecked rubble with a painted ground floor and some ashlar dressings, also painted.

On the west elevation, the entrance features a door with a short staircase and an adjoining window, with a single window located on the first and second floors above. There is a slim light in the left bay at ground level. The southwest corner is splayed and has a crowstepped gable, an entrance door, and bipartite windows with cusped heads on the first and second floors above, along with a single trefoil window in the attic.

The north elevation has a large window in the center on the first floor, a single window in the left bay on the second floor, and a small window in the attic above. There is a modern extension present.

The east elevation features a modern extension at ground level, a large canted bay on the first floor that rises into a smaller bay on the second floor, with an attic window above. There are bipartite windows in the right bay on both the first and second floors, along with an attic window above. A square turret is corbelled out at the southeast angle on the second floor.

On the south elevation, there is a single window in the left bay on both the first and second floors, and a central window in the attic. There is also a single-storey flat-roofed extension with port-holes adjoining to the outer right.

The hotel features a variety of glazing patterns, a slate roof with crowstepped skews, and rubble stacks at the gable ends, with the south stack reduced in height. The interior was not seen in 2000.
