Description

Shrub Mount is an early 19th-century, two-storey, three-bay rectangular-plan house located on Portobello High Street in Edinburgh. It features a mid-19th-century single-storey former museum attached to the rear. The exterior is harled and whitewashed with raised painted margins.

The southwest elevation, which serves as the entrance, is nearly symmetrical. The ground floor is obscured by 20th-century shop fronts, while the first floor has windows in the centre and left bays, and a late 19th-century canted window in the right bay.

On the southeast elevation, there is a doorway to the former museum, which is enclosed in an adjoining close to a late 19th-century tenement. This entrance is accessed through a boarded timber door located to the left of the tenement's ground floor. The recessed porch is supported by two Tuscan columns and flanked by pilasters, featuring a flush-panelled timber door that has been re-sited off-centre. Evidence of a single window exists to the left of the porch, but the rest of this elevation is obscured by the adjoining building.

The northeast elevation is asymmetrical, with a bowed bay at the centre that is partly constructed of brick. It has a window in the centre and right, and a timber door to the left. There is a flat timber door with a letterbox fanlight and a small square window in the left flanking bay, and a recessed doorway in the right flanking bay. A single-storey block is attached to the outer right.

The northwest elevation is obscured by an adjoining building, but there is an off-centre window to the right of the first floor of the High Street block. The building features modern pivot and plate glass windows with top hoppers, grey slate part piended roofs with lead ridges, a coped harled wallhead stack with circular cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods.

Inside, the ground floor has been significantly altered, but it includes a stone stair with a timber handrail and iron balusters, timber panelled doors, reeded architraves, and original plain cornices on the coombed ceilings of the first floor. The interior of the museum was not seen in 1999.
