Description

62 Portobello High Street is an early 19th-century, two-storey, three-bay classical building located at the corner of Portobello High Street and Pipe Street, on a sloping site that falls to the southeast. The building is constructed of droved ashlar with polished ashlar dressings on the first floor, while the southeast elevation features rubble, and the rear is harled. There is a bull-face render addition at the rear, along with a base course, a band course between the ground and first floor, a cill course to the first floor, a cornice, and a blocking course.

The southwest elevation, which is the principal front, has a chamfered corner bay on the left with a shop entrance at ground level and a window above on the first floor. The central and right bays also have shop windows at ground level, with a 1950s-style shop sign (Laundrette) on the fascia. The first floor features windows in each bay.

The northwest elevation, facing Pipe Street, has irregularly placed bays with a shop window in the ground centre bay and to the right. There is a blank window in the first floor of the right bay, while the remaining bays have windows on the first floor.

The northeast elevation includes a two-storey later addition in the centre. The building has plate glass timber sash and case windows on the southwest side, and four-pane timber sash and case windows on the northwest side. The roof is a grey slate piended type, with rendered and coped wallhead stacks located on the outer right and between the centre and left bay of the northwest elevation, as well as on the outer right of the northeast elevation and continuously along the southeast elevation.

The interior was not seen in 1994, but it is noted that the shop interior has been modernised.
