Description

37 York Place is a later 18th century, three-storey terraced house with an attic and basement, featuring seven bays in a classical style. The exterior is constructed of broached ashlar sandstone, with V-jointed rustication at the principal floor. There is a base course and band courses between the basement and principal floor, as well as between the principal and first floor, and a cill course at the first floor. The second floor has projecting cills, and the entrance features ashlar steps and platts that oversail the basement.

On the north (principal) elevation, there is a nine-panel timber common stair door with a blind six-pane rectangular fanlight at the center, flanked by two four-panel timber doors with radial semicircular fanlights. The principal floor has windows in the remaining bays, with regular fenestration on the upper floors and basement. The basement area is flagged.

The west and east elevations are part of adjoining terraces, which are detailed in separate listings for 29-31 York Place and 39-43 York Place, respectively. The south (rear) elevation was not seen in 1998.

The house predominantly features twelve-pane timber sash and case windows and has a grey slate M-roof with a pair of rectangular slate-hung tripartite dormers and modern skylights. Cast-iron rainwater goods are present, along with broached ashlar ridge stacks that are coped and have circular cans, as well as coped skews.

The interiors were not seen in 1998. The property is enclosed by ashlar copes topped with cast-iron railings featuring spear-headed and urn finials.
