Description

27 York Place is a later 18th century, three-storey terraced classical house with an attic and basement, situated on a corner site in Edinburgh. The building features broached ashlar sandstone with V-jointed rustication at the principal floor. It has a base course, band courses between the basement and principal floor, and between the principal and first floor, as well as a cill course at the first floor and a cornice at the second floor. The second floor has projecting cills, and there are ashlar steps leading to an entrance platform that oversails the basement.

On the north (principal) elevation, there is a round-arched doorway located to the right of centre at the principal floor, featuring a four-panel timber door and a two-pane semicircular fanlight. The remaining bays at the principal floor have windows, while the upper floors and basement display regular fenestration. The basement area is flagged.

The west (Elder Street East) elevation consists of a four-bay gable with an extension to the right, which was added after the 1969 demolition for the widening of Elder Street, and is built on falling ground. This elevation has three windows at the principal floor, with a blind window in the outer left bay and the penultimate bay from the left. The first and second floors have irregularly spaced windows, and there is a pair of windows in the attic.

The east elevation is part of an adjoining terrace, which is detailed in a separate listing for 29-31 York Place. The south (rear) elevation is mostly not visible and includes a flat-roofed full-height single bay extension to the left, with a window centered on all floors.

The building features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate M-roof, and a pair of slate-hung rectangular tripartite dormers, along with modern skylights. It has cast-iron rainwater goods and a broached gablehead stack that is corniced with circular cans, as well as coped skews.

The interiors were not seen in 1998. The railings consist of ashlar copes topped with cast-iron railings featuring spear-headed and urn finials.
