Description
34 York Place is a classical terraced house from the later 18th century, featuring three storeys, an attic, and a basement. The building is constructed from broached ashlar sandstone, with V-jointed rustication on the principal floor. It has a base course, a band course between the basement and the principal floor, a decorative frieze at the impost level, and a cornice at the principal floor. There is a cill course at the first floor, a band course between the first and second floors, and a mutule cornice with a blocking course at the second floor. The windows at the first floor are architraved with cornices, while those at the second floor are simply architraved. The principal floor features projecting cills, and there are ashlar steps leading to an entrance platt that oversails the basement.
On the south elevation, there is a round-arched tripartite doorpiece in the left bay of the principal floor, which includes pilasters flanking a four-panel timber door with a plate glass semicircular fanlight and sidelights. The remaining bays on the principal floor have windows set in round-arched recesses, and the upper floors have regular fenestration. The basement area is flagged.
The west elevation adjoins another terrace, which is listed separately as 32 York Place, and the east elevation adjoins yet another terrace, listed as 36 York Place. The north (rear) elevation was not seen in 1998.
The house predominantly features plate glass timber sash and case windows, a grey slate M-roof, and a recessed rectangular slate-hung dormer. It has cast-iron rainwater goods, a broached ashlar ridge stack that is coped with circular cans, and coped skews.
The interiors were not seen in 1998. The railings consist of ashlar copes topped with cast-iron railings featuring spear-headed and urn finials.
