Description
24 York Place is a later 18th century, three-storey classical terraced house with an attic and basement. It features broached ashlar sandstone with V-jointed rustication on the principal floor. The building has a base course, band courses between the basement and principal floor, as well as between the principal and first floors. There is a frieze at the impost level on the principal floor, a cill course at the first floor, and a mutuled cornice with a blocking course at the second floor. The first-floor windows are architraved with cornices, while the second-floor windows have projecting cills. Ashlar steps lead to an entrance platform that oversails the basement.
On the south (principal) elevation, there is a round-arched recessed doorway in the bay to the right of centre at the principal floor, featuring a four-panel timber door with a radial semicircular fanlight. The remaining bays on the principal floor have windows set in round-arched recesses, and there is regular fenestration on the floors above and in the basement. The basement area is flagged.
The west elevation adjoins another terrace, which is listed separately as 22 York Place. The east elevation also adjoins a terrace, listed separately as 26 York Place. The north (rear) elevation was not seen during the 1998 inspection.
The house has 12-pane timber sash and case windows and a grey slate M-roof. There are a pair of polygonal piended slate-hung dormers, and cast-iron rainwater goods. The ridge and gablehead stacks are broached ashlar and rendered, coped with circular cans, and the skews are also coped.
The interiors were not seen during the 1998 inspection, but there is evidence of working panelled shutters. The property features ashlar copes topped with cast-iron railings that have spear-headed and urn finials.
