Description
22 York Place is a later 18th century, three-storey terraced classical house with an attic and basement. It is constructed from broached ashlar sandstone, featuring V-jointed rustication on the principal floor. The building has a base course, band courses between the basement and principal floor, and between the principal and first floor. There is a moulded frieze at the impost level of the principal floor, a cill course at the first floor, and a mutulated cornice with a blocking course at the second floor. The windows on the first and second floors are architraved and have cornices at the first floor. Ashlar steps lead to an entrance platform that oversails the basement.
On the south (principal) elevation, there is a round-arched recessed tripartite doorway in the left bay at the principal floor, which consists of a four-panel timber door with a plate glass semicircular fanlight, plate glass sidelights, and aprons. The remaining bays at the principal floor have windows in round-arched recesses, while the floors above and the basement have regular fenestration. The basement area is flagged.
The west elevation adjoins another terrace, which is listed separately as 20 York Place. The east elevation also adjoins another terrace, listed as 24 York Place. The north (rear) elevation was not seen in 1998.
The house features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate M-roof, and a polygonal piended slate-hung dormer. It has cast-iron rainwater goods and a broached ashlar and rendered ridge stack that is coped with circular cans, as well as coped skews.
The interiors were not seen in 1998 but are noted to include foliated Roman Doric columns in the entrance hall and an apsed, panelled dining room.
The property is also adorned with ashlar copes topped by cast-iron railings that have spear-headed and urn finials. There is a lamp mounted on the cast-iron railing with glass globes.
