Description
28 York Place is a classical terraced house from the later 18th century, featuring three stories, an attic, and a basement. The building is constructed from broached ashlar sandstone and showcases V-jointed rustication on the principal floor. It has a base course, band courses between the basement and principal floor as well as between the principal and first floors, and a cill course at the first floor. The second floor is adorned with a mutuled cornice and a blocking course. The windows are architraved with cornices on the first floor and simply architraved on the second floor. There is a long and short quoin motif at both the first and second floors, and ashlar steps lead up to an entrance platt that oversails the basement.
On the south (principal) elevation, there is a round-arched recessed doorway in the left bay at the principal floor, featuring a four-panel timber door with a plate glass semicircular fanlight. The remaining bays on the principal floor have windows, while the floors above and the basement display regular fenestration. The basement area is flagged.
The west and east elevations are part of adjoining terraces, which are listed separately (26 York Place and 30 York Place, respectively). The north (rear) elevation was not visible in 1998.
The house predominantly features two-pane timber sash and case windows and has a grey slate M-roof with a rectangular slate-hung dormer and a modern skylight. It includes cast-iron rainwater goods and a broached ashlar ridge stack that is coped with circular cans, along with coped skews.
The interiors were not seen in 1998. The property is also enhanced by ashlar copes topped with cast-iron railings that have spear-headed and urn finials. Additionally, there are cast-iron lamps mounted on the railings, each with glass globes.
