Description

Raeburn House, located at 32 York Place in Edinburgh, is a classical terraced house built in 1795. It has three storeys, an attic, and a basement, and features a three-bay facade constructed from broached ashlar sandstone. The principal floor showcases V-jointed rustication, a base course, and band courses between the basement and principal floor, as well as between the principal and first floors. There is a cill course at the first floor, and a mutuled cornice with a blocking course at the second floor. The windows on the first floor are architraved with cornices, and the central bay has a pediment with consoles. The second floor has projecting cills, and the entrance is accessed via ashlar steps and an entrance platt that oversails the basement.

On the south elevation, there is a pedimented Roman Doric tripartite doorpiece in the left bay of the principal floor, which includes pilasters and engaged columns flanking a four-panel timber door with a radial rectangular fanlight and five-pane sidelights. The remaining bays on the principal floor have windows, and there is regular fenestration on the upper floors and basement. A carved stone plaque between the principal and first floors is shaped like an artist's palette and reads, "In this house, built by him, Sir Henry Raeburn painted from 1798 to 1809," accompanied by an ornamental festoon. Additionally, there is a tooled central wallhead tablet that reads "Raeburn House." The basement area is flagged.

The west and east elevations adjoin other terraces, which are listed separately. The north (rear) elevation, not seen since 1998, is two bays with irregular fenestration and has undergone alterations and additions. The house predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate M-roof, and cast-iron rainwater goods. The ridge stack is made of broached ashlar and is coped with circular cans, and the skews are also coped.

The interiors were not seen in 1998. The property is enclosed by railings consisting of ashlar copes topped with cast-iron railings featuring spear-headed and urn finials.
