Description

30 York Place is a classical terraced house built in the later 19th century. It has three storeys, an attic, and a basement, featuring a three-bay design. The exterior is made of broached ashlar sandstone, with V-jointed rustication on the principal floor. Architectural details include a base course, a band course between the basement and the principal floor, an advanced frieze and cornice at the impost level of the principal floor, a cill course at the first floor, a band course between the first and second floors, and a mutuled cornice with a blocking course at the second floor. The windows on the first floor are architraved with cornices, and the central bay features a pediment. The second floor has architraved windows, and the principal floor has projecting cills. The entrance features ashlar steps and an oversailing entrance platt leading to the basement.

On the south elevation, there is a round-arched recessed doorway in the left bay at the principal floor, which includes a four-panel timber door with a two-pane semicircular fanlight. The remaining bays at the principal floor have windows set in round-arched recesses, while the floors above and the basement have regular fenestration. The basement area is flagged.

The west elevation adjoins another terrace, which is listed separately as 28 York Place, and the east elevation adjoins another terrace listed as 32 York Place. The north (rear) elevation was not seen in 1998.

The house features predominantly three-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate M-roof with modern skylights, and cast-iron rainwater goods. There is a broached ashlar ridge stack that is coped and has circular cans, along with coped skews.

The interiors were not seen in 1998. The property is enhanced by railings and a lamp; the railings are made of cast iron with spear-headed and urn finials, and there is a cast-iron lamp mounted on the railings with glass globes.
