Description
38 York Place is a classical terraced house built in the later 18th century. It has three storeys, an attic, and a basement, with a three-bay façade arranged in a 2-1 grouping. The exterior is constructed from broached ashlar sandstone, featuring V-jointed rustication on the principal floor and rock-faced rustication at the basement. There is a base course, band courses between the basement and principal floor, as well as between the principal and first floors, and cill courses at the first and second floors. The building is topped with a dentilled cornice and a blocking course at the second floor. The first floor has architraved windows with cornices, and the entrance features ashlar steps and entrance platts that oversail the basement.
On the south (principal) elevation, there is a round-arched doorway in the right bay at the principal floor, which includes a four-panel timber door with a radial semicircular fanlight. The remaining bays on this floor have windows, and the upper floors and basement display regular fenestration. The basement area is flagged.
The west elevation adjoins another terrace, which is listed separately (36 and 36A York Place), as does the east elevation (40-42 York Place). The north (rear) elevation was not seen in 1998.
The windows are 12-pane timber sash and case. The roof is covered with grey slate and features a pair of rectangular slate-hung dormers. The building has cast-iron rainwater goods and a broached ashlar ridge stack that is coped and has circular cans. The skews are also coped.
The interiors were not seen in 1998. The property includes ashlar copes topped with cast-iron railings that have spear-headed and urn finials. There is also a cast-iron lamp mounted on the railings, featuring a glass globe.
