Description
18 York Place is a classical terraced house built in the later 18th century. It has three storeys, an attic, and a basement, with a three-bay façade constructed from broached ashlar sandstone. The principal floor features V-jointed rustication, a base course, and band courses between the basement and principal floor, as well as between the principal and first floors. There is a cill course at the first floor, a mutuled cornice, and a blocking course at the second floor. The first-floor windows are architraved and corniced, while the second-floor windows are simply architraved. The entrance has ashlar steps and an oversailing entrance platt above the basement.
On the south elevation, the advanced tripartite doorway is located in the left bay of the principal floor. It consists of pairs of Ionic pilasters that flank a nine-panel timber door with a radial rectangular fanlight and four-pane sidelights, topped with a tooled lintel and cornice. The remaining bays on the principal floor have windows, and there is regular fenestration on the upper floors and basement. The basement area is flagged.
The west elevation adjoins another terrace, which is listed separately as 16 York Place, while the east elevation adjoins 20 York Place, also listed separately. The north (rear) elevation was not seen in 1998.
The house features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate M-roof, and a rectangular slate-hung dormer with modern skylights. It has cast-iron rainwater goods and a broached ashlar and rendered ridge stack that is coped and has circular cans. The skews are also coped.
The interiors were not seen in 1998. The railings consist of ashlar copes topped with cast-iron railings featuring spear-headed and urn finials, including lamps that do not have glass globes.
