Description

14 York Place is a later 18th century, three-storey terraced classical house with an attic and basement. It is constructed from broached ashlar sandstone and features V-jointed rustication at the principal floor. The building has a base course, a band course between the basement and principal floor, a cill course at the first floor, and a cornice with a blocking course at the second floor. The second floor also has projecting cills, and there are ashlar steps leading to an entrance platt that oversails the basement.

On the south elevation, there is an advanced architraved tripartite doorway in the left bay at the principal floor, which consists of pairs of pilasters flanking a two-leaf decorative timber door with a rectangular plate glass fanlight above. This doorway is topped with a tooled lintel and cornice, and has plate glass sidelights and aprons. The remaining bays on the principal floor have windows, while the upper floors and basement feature regular fenestration. There is a flagged basement area.

The west and east elevations are part of an adjoining terrace, which are listed separately as 12 York Place and 16 York Place, respectively. The north (rear) elevation was not seen in 1998.

The building predominantly has four-pane timber sash and case windows and a grey slate M-roof, along with a bow-fronted slate-hung dormer and modern skylights. It features cast-iron rainwater goods and broached ashlar ridge stacks that are coped with circular cans, as well as coped skews.

The interiors were not seen in 1998. The property is also adorned with ashlar copes topped by cast-iron railings with spear-headed and urn finials, along with cast-iron railing-mounted lamps featuring glass globes.
