Description
47 and 49 York Place in Edinburgh is a classical terraced house built in 1795. It has three storeys, an attic, and a basement, and features five bays constructed from broached ashlar sandstone. The building includes band courses between the basement and principal floor, as well as between the first and second floors. There is a frieze at the impost level of the principal floor and a cill course at the first floor, which is broken with lowered cills except in the outer right bay. The second floor is adorned with a mutuled cornice and blocking course, along with projecting cills.
The north elevation, which is the principal facade, has an arcaded principal floor with round-arched doorways that feature nine-panel timber doors and semicircular fanlights. The central door and the one in the outer right bay are particularly notable. The remaining bays on this floor have windows set in round-arched recesses, while the floors above have regular fenestration and the basement has irregular fenestration. The basement area is flagged.
The west elevation is part of an adjoining terrace, which is listed separately as 45 York Place, and the east elevation is also part of an adjoining terrace, listed as 51 York Place. The south elevation, or rear, was not visible in 1998.
The windows throughout are predominantly plate glass timber sash and case. The roof is a grey slate M-roof with two tiers of continuous dormers spanning four bays. The top tier is vertically boarded and features a modern timber and metal railing balustrade over the lower tier. The building has cast-iron rainwater goods and broached ashlar ridge stacks that are coped with circular cans, along with coped skews.
The railings consist of ashlar copes topped with cast-iron railings that have spear-headed and urn finials.
