Description
The Osbourne Hotel, located at 57-59 York Place in Edinburgh, is a classical terraced house built in the later 18th century. It stands three storeys tall, with an attic and basement, and features seven bays. The exterior is constructed of broached ashlar sandstone, showcasing V-jointed rustication at the principal floor. There are band courses between the basement and principal floor, as well as between the first and second floors. A cill course is present at the first floor, and both the first and second floors have projecting cills. The second floor is adorned with a mutuled cornice and a blocking course. The entrance is accessed via ashlar steps and an entrance platts that oversail the basement.
On the north (principal) elevation, the doorway consists of a recessed nine-panel timber door with glazed upper and middle panels, accompanied by a two-pane rectangular fanlight centered at the principal floor. To the left, there is a round-arched pilastered doorway with an architraved nine-panel timber door and a radial semicircular fanlight. To the right, a panelled timber door features a plate glass semicircular fanlight, and there is a modern canopy that reads 'Osborne Hotel', supported by decorative iron brackets mounted on the wall. The remaining bays on the principal floor and the upper floors, as well as the basement, exhibit regular fenestration. The basement area is flagged.
The west elevation adjoins another terrace, which is listed separately (53-55 York Place), as does the east elevation (63-67 York Place). The building features plate glass and 12-pane timber sash and case windows, and the roof is covered with grey slate. There are two rectangular slate-hung dormers on the right and a box dormer spanning three bays on the left, which includes a pair of canted windows. The rainwater goods are made of cast iron, and the ridge stack is rendered and lined, with broached ashlar ridge stacks and a rubble and broached ashlar stack that breaks the pitch, all coped with circular cans. The skews are also coped.
The interiors have not been seen since 1998. The property is enclosed by ashlar copes topped with cast-iron railings that feature spear-headed and urn finials.
