Description

51 York Place in Edinburgh is a classical terraced house built in the later 18th century, with some alterations made since then. The building is three stories tall, with an attic and basement, and features a three-bay façade made of broached ashlar sandstone. The principal floor has V-jointed rustication, with band courses separating the basement from the principal floor and the first from the second floor. A mutuled cornice and blocking course can be found at the second floor, along with projecting cills at the first and second floors. The entrance is accessed via ashlar steps that oversail the basement.

On the north (principal) elevation, there is a doorway with a recessed panelled timber door and a rectangular fanlight made of plate glass located in the right bay of the principal floor. The remaining bays on the principal floor and the floors above have regular fenestration. The basement features a three-bay shopfront with wide ashlar steps, including a multi-pane glazed door in the right bay, glazed sidelights, and plate glass windows in the other bays.

The west and east elevations are part of adjoining terraces, which are listed separately as 47-49 York Place and 53-55 York Place, respectively. The south (rear) elevation was not seen during the last inspection in 1998.

The house predominantly has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with plate glass windows on the principal floor. The roof is covered with grey slate and features a pair of rectangular slate-hung dormers. The building has cast-iron rainwater goods, a rendered and lined ridge stack with a coped top and circular cans, and coped skews.

The interiors were not seen during the last inspection in 1998. The property is also adorned with ashlar copes topped with cast-iron railings that have spear-headed and urn finials, along with decorative iron railings on the entrance platt and steps.
