1 Burgess Terrace Including Gateway, Edinburgh

1 Burgess Terrace, including the gateway, is a late 19th-century, two-storey, three-bay house featuring classical details. It is constructed of cream sandstone polished ashlar, with rubble on the sides and rear. The building has a base course, channelled quoins, and chip-carved floral details above the openings. There is a dividing band course, an eaves course, and a cornice.

On the west (entrance) elevation, there is a shouldered arched central doorway with a panelled door and a plate glass fanlight. This doorway is flanked by strip pilasters leading to a corbelled corniced doorpiece, which has a decorative cast iron window guard. Above the doorway, there is a single window on the first floor with an advanced, shouldered architrave. To the outer left on the ground floor, there is a single window with a shouldered, advanced, and corniced architrave, and above it on the first floor is another window with an advanced, shouldered architrave. On the outer right, there is a full-height, three-light canted window with a polygonal roof.

The north elevation features a central round arched stair window and an opening at ground level. The windows throughout are made of plate glass, timber, and sash and case, with a leaded glass stair window. The roof is a grey slate piended roof with coped, rendered, and shouldered wallhead stacks.

The interior was not seen in 1996. The property has low coped boundary walls facing the street and replacement railings, with a pedestrian gate adjoining to the north.
