Description

4 Kilmaurs Terrace is a group of four houses built around 1880, designed in a Free Style Baronial style. These two-storey, two-bay houses are part of a terrace and are constructed from cream sandstone coursed rubble with ashlar dressings on the front, while the sides and rear are made of squared and snecked rubble. The buildings feature a base course, cornices above the canted bays, and coped skews between the houses.

The northern entrance elevation has tripartite doorways in the two central bays and at the outer left and penultimate right. Each doorway has two-leaf panelled doors and plate glass fanlights, framed by carved architraves with panels above. The doorways are segmental-arched at Nos 2 and 8 (with No 2 featuring a carved stag's head) and round-arched at the two central doorways. Above these doorways are single windows, with the windows at Nos 2 and 8 having pediments topped with carved finials. The remaining bays have full-height, three-light, canted windows, with No 8 displaying a broken pediment and a polygonal roof, along with cast-iron finials on the roofs.

On the western elevation facing Dalkeith Road, there is a full-height, three-light canted window at the outer right, with single windows on both floors to the immediate left and single windows on both floors to the outer left. The first-floor window on the outer left breaks the eaves and features a pediment with a carved finial.

The houses predominantly have four-pane timber sash and case windows, with some plate glass in No 4. The roofs are pitched with grey slate, featuring coped ridge and wallhead stacks.
