21-23 Thistle Street, Edinburgh

21-23 Thistle Street in Edinburgh is a pair of late 18th century classical houses that were largely rebuilt around 1990. These three-storey buildings, which include a basement and attic, are located at the end of a terrace on sloping ground, with an additional bay added to the west. They are constructed from broached and droved cream ashlar sandstone, featuring polished dressings.

On the south elevation facing Thistle Street, there is a cill course at the ground level. The central area has paired pilastered doorpieces topped with a uniting cornice, leading to panelled doors and three-pane fanlights. There is another doorway in the far left bay with a panelled door. The roof features three piend-roofed canted dormers.

The west side elevation is gabled and consists of seven bays. It has three windows on the second floor, one of which is blocked at ground level, and a bipartite window in the rebuilt gablehead. The corner sweeps to the north.

The northeast elevation facing Thistle Street Lane is four storeys high with a mansard roof and consists of six bays. This elevation has been rebuilt and is predominantly harled with sandstone dressings, including an additional stone bay on the right. Garages are located at the ground level, and there are five dormers.

The buildings feature 12-pane timber sash and case windows, ashlar coped skews, and grey slates on the roof, with top lighting for the attic and a rebuilt stone stack.

Inside, the property is now a single office but retains some original interior features, including a room with a panelled dado, cornice, and a grey marble chimneypiece.
