Description

79 Hanover Street in Edinburgh is an impressive classical tenement building, constructed between 1784 and 1790. It stands three storeys high with an attic and features a ground floor that accommodates shops, including a basement. The building is made of droved cream sandstone ashlar with polished dressings and has 11 bays. The central five bays are highlighted by a slightly projecting entrance bay with a pediment, where steps lead up to a doorway flanked by Roman Doric columns that support a segmental open pediment. The outer bays are designed as pairs of bows.

The ground floor is built out as shops on either side of the entrance, featuring pilasters and cornices, although modern glazing and doors have been added. To the south, there is a larger shop with two commercial premises in the basement, while the north side has two shops with more elaborate decoration. A cill course runs along the first floor, where the windows have been lowered in the five southern bays. The building has an eaves cornice and mid-19th century piend-roofed dormers, with canted dormers at the center and single dormers on the outer bays, along with rooflights.

The gable end is constructed of coursed rubble and has windows at the center. The rear elevation is made of rubble and features a pair of gables at the center, flanked by three bays on each side. The ground floor shops are crudely built out, and there is a mansard attic to the south.

The windows are timber sash and case, mostly with 12 panes, while the flats on the first floor have plate glass. The building has ashlar coped skews, rendered stacks, and is topped with grey slates. The interior was not seen in 1995.
