Description
The Staff Quarters at the Elsie Inglis Memorial Hospital in Spring Gardens, Edinburgh, was designed by H O Tarbolton in 1927. This symmetrical, H-plan building originally served as a nurses' home and is now converted into flats as of 2007. It features a recessed two-storey and attic, six-bay central range flanked by three-storey, two-bay outer sections, which have distinctive jerkinhead roofs. The structure is built of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern and includes rectangular window openings with brick lintel details, a base course, and a string course.
The main elevation to the west showcases an advanced single-storey entrance porch with a pan-tiled bell-cast roof. The east elevation features stair towers positioned in the re-entrant angles. The building predominantly has 12-pane non-traditional casement windows and a mansard roof on the central range, with modern red pantiles.
