Description

The Elsie Inglis Memorial Hospital Outpatients Clinic, located at 10 Spring Gardens in Edinburgh, was designed by H O Tarbolton in 1924 and extended in 1935. This building features a single and two-storey irregular plan with distinctive decorative curvilinear gables. It was originally the outpatients' department and is currently used as a nursery and flats as of 2007. The structure consists of two sections connected by a single-storey entrance corridor and is built of red brick in a stretcher bond pattern, with raised cills and brick detailing on the lintels. The west gable has canted sides and a central tall, round-arched window, with some round-arched openings at the ground level.

The northern elevation, facing Spring Gardens, includes two storeys and five bays, featuring a central four-panel timber entrance door with a three-light fanlight above. To the far right, there is a two-leaf timber door with an inscriptive memorial plaque above. The outer bays have symmetrical curvilinear gables.

On the eastern elevation, there is an off-centre round-arched entrance opening with a recessed four-panel timber door and a small-pane glazing pattern in the fanlight above. The building predominantly has multi-pane metal casement and hopper windows, red pantiles on the roof, and cast iron rainwater goods, which include rainwater heads dated 1935.

The interior has been comprehensively altered, but some brick fire surrounds remain, as observed in 2007.
