Description

21-22 Portland Place is a five-storey corner tenement building dating from around 1821, situated on a raised basement. It is constructed from droved cream sandstone ashlar with polished ashlar dressings. The building features a base course, a band course above the ground and first floors, a cill course to the second floor (which has shortened windows), a cornice at the third floor, and a full-height attic. The ground level falls to the north.

The north elevation on Portland Place has five bays, with the two right bays forming a segmental bow. The raised basement includes a door and shop window in the painted bow, while the central bay has a door with modern facing, and a modern restaurant is located to the left. The attic displays moulded eaves and a blocking course. To the right is a public house known as The Caley Inn.

The west elevation on Portland Street also has five bays. The four left bays have their basement and ground floors obscured by the public house. The first floor is rusticated, with two left windows being blind, and the left window of the upper floors is also blind. The gable is irregular with an apex stack over the first three bays. The right bay is plain and slightly recessed, featuring two flights of steps leading to a panelled tenement door with a rectangular three-pane fanlight positioned between the ground and first floors. Windows are present on the second and third floors, and there is a box dormer in the attic.

The windows are 12-pane timber sash and case, with 4-pane windows on the ground and first floors of Portland Place. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are coped ashlar stacks. The steps leading to Portland Street are accompanied by plain wrought-iron railings.
