Description

37-41 Frederick Street is a classical tenement building constructed between 1786 and 1792, with early 19th century alterations at the ground level. It stands three stories high, with a raised basement and attic, and features six bays. The exterior is made of droved cream sandstone ashlar with polished dressings and includes an eaves cornice.

The right bay has steps leading to an architraved doorpiece that is adorned with a cornice and an elaborate rosette frieze, leading to a glazed door for the common stair. The inner right bay features steps leading to a ground floor shop with an Ionic columned doorpiece. Each bay on the left has five large plate glass windows framed by fluted pilasters, positioned between a base course and an entablature. The centre right bay has steps leading down to a basement door with a consoled cornice, and there is a three-bay shop with raised architraves to the left in the basement. At the roof, there are two narrow piend-roofed dormers at the centre, along with a broader inset dormer to the left.

The building has timber sash and case windows, with plate glass on the first floor and four-pane windows on the second. The skews are ashlar coped, and there are rendered stacks, including a vestigial stone mutual stack to the south, with the skew and eaves of a former building. The roof is covered with grey slates. The interior was not seen in 1995.
