Description

208 Newhaven Road is an early 19th-century, two-storey, three-bay classical house that forms the end of a terrace. It features a pitched single-storey addition with an attic on the side, which may have been converted from a carriage house. The house is built from coursed cream rubble sandstone, with a prominent cherry cocking on the main elevation and coursed yellow sandstone on the pitched addition. The building has polished, raised, and painted ashlar dressings, raised quoins, and droved long and short window surrounds. At the ground level, the front is obscured by rendered flat-roofed single-storey retail outlets.

The west entrance elevation showcases a Roman Doric doorpiece in the outer right bay, which includes flanking pilasters (partly demolished to the right), projecting capitals, rosette motifs on the entablature, a plain frieze, and a projecting cornice. The original timber panelled door has a bipartite fanlight above with a timber mullion. There are single windows in two bays to the left of the entrance at ground level, and single windows in all bays on the first floor. To the outer right, there are boarded timber doors leading to a garage conversion, with a quadripartite glazing row above.

The house features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with 2-pane sash and case windows in the rear pitched dormers, and fixed and pivot windows in the attic conversion. The roof is covered with graded grey slate and has raised stone skews. There is a corniced rubble apex stack to the south and a partly rendered coped apex stack to the north, which is mutual with No. 212, along with some octagonal cans.

The interior was not seen in 1996. The boundary wall to the south is made of random rubble sandstone, and there is a single droved gatepier to the right of the entry, which features a pyramidal cap and decorative ironwork, although the left pier is missing. The gates are replacement cast iron.
